Pupils take part in engaging, structured tasks that build confidence and develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Literacy is tailored to each pupil and is taught through fiction, instruction texts and poetry. Our literacy programme provides opportunity for students to engage with a variety of interesting texts.
Reading is a priority at Lansdown Park. Reading is a skill that opens doors for other learning, develops vocabulary and supports oracy. There are reading opportunities throughout the curriculum alongside daily 1:1 reading, equipping them with the skills to become fluent readers and explore the meaning of texts. We want to develop a love of reading and for our students to read a wide variety of texts with engagement and curiosity. 1:1 reading is personalised for each pupil; they access high-interest texts matched to their reading level. Children have daily opportunities for guided, shared, and independent reading.
Phonics is taught using a programme called Unlocking Letters and Sounds. Daily phonic sessions are taught on a 1:1 basis, where phonics support is needed. These are tailored to each pupil based on assessment. Our Unlocking letters and sounds interventions have a particular focus on building knowledge of graphemes and developing blending to read skills.
We focus on number, place value and operations with reasoning and problem solving in every lesson. Helping children develop a strong number sense, and enthusiasm for maths, provides a foundation for maths in everyday life. Based on accurate assessment, learning is adapted to ensure gaps in mathematical knowledge are addressed.
Oracy lays the foundation for effective communication, critical thinking and confidence in learning. By focussing on oracy, we help children develop the ability to express themselves clearly, listen actively and engage in meaningful discussions.
