In KS1, there is a focus on developing reading, writing and speaking and listening skills through a range of engaging fiction books. The children explore sequence, character, setting and language through creative activities as well as word based, and sentence based supported work in books.
Reading is a priority at Lansdown Park. Reading is a skill that opens doors for other learning, develops vocabulary and supports oracy. In KS1, we want to promote an enjoyment of books, alongside the skills to independently read and understand them. Through daily 1:1 reading sessions, partner and group reading, adults’ model, read aloud and support children to explore books together. There are regular times through the day for children to listen to stories; from adults, peers or visiting secondary students. Our KS1 classroom has an inviting book corner for children to independently enjoy books.
Phonics is taught using a programme called Unlocking Letters and Sounds. Daily phonic sessions are taught mostly on a 1:1 basis. These are tailored to each pupil based on assessment. Our Unlocking letters and sounds interventions have a particular focus on building knowledge of graphemes and developing blending to read skills.
We focus on counting, number, place value and operations whilst developing their maths vocabulary and reasoning skills. We ensure there are opportunities for children to explore mathematical concepts through play and games. Understanding is strongly supported by a range of practical activities and resources.
In KS1, there is a focus on regulation and social skills, which in turn support emotional well-being and personal development. In KS1 pupils learn about feelings and their bodies. Learning through practical activities and games as well as talk, supported by books and visuals.
Enrichment trips provide real-world experiences that broaden pupils’ learning and social skills. They inspire curiosity, teamwork, and confidence inside and outside the classroom. Our Enrichment programme focusses on developing 8 key life skills.
These lessons encourage creativity and self-expression through practical activities. They will explore and learn different techniques using a range of art mediums.
DT lessons focus on projects that develop problem-solving and practical skills. Pupils design and make.
Sensory science lessons use hands-on, multi-sensory activities to spark curiosity and support engagement. Learning is practical and adapted to meet individual needs, helping pupils explore scientific ideas in a meaningful way.
Cooking lessons teach practical skills like food preparation, safety, and healthy eating. Pupils gain independence and confidence through hands-on cooking activities.
Weekly Forest School sessions offer outdoor learning that builds confidence, teamwork, and practical skills. Pupils engage with nature through hands-on activities that support well-being and personal growth.
