Maths Curriculum

Intent:

Through the primary placement, we focus on the foundational aspects of number from the ready-to-progress (RTP) curriculum. These are the core building blocks on which other maths concepts can we explored and understood. We focus on the strands of number, place value and operations, in order to ensure that when children return to mainstream, they have a better base on which to further develop their maths.

Our confidence and ability with numbers impacts us financially, socially, and professionally. It even affects our health and wellbeing.

Understanding and using mathematical concepts, and being numerate, helps children know and describe the world around them and make meaning of these encounters. It is, therefore, an essential skill for successful daily life.

Implementation:

Our ready to progress assessment will determine where a student will begin. Teachers adapt lessons to meet individual learning level and need. This also informs focus areas for targets.

Over the two-term placement, we focus on consolidating their understanding of number. This foundation will support them in accessing maths learning in their mainstream schools

Every lesson has 4 parts:

Daily review: recalls prior learning, needed for the learning today.

Discover: new learning, using visuals and manipulatives to support understanding.

Think: applying the new learning and working independently.

Reflect: using learning and vocabulary to justify and reason.

We use the Power Maths ready-to progress curriculum to support effective teaching for progression:

Number and Place Value

Number Facts

Addition and Subtraction

Multiplication and Division

If a child is working  Pre key stage 1, Children will need to consolidate the building blocks of number* to then access the ready to progress curriculum. This is taught alongside the Early Learning Goals for Number.

*Building blocks of number: Cardinality and Counting, Comparison, Composition and Pattern.

Impact:

The Maths curriculum at Lansdown Park Academy equips the students with increased confidence in understanding number and being able to relate maths to everyday life. The use of manipulatives supports the understanding and application of new concepts, enabling learners to approach challenges with more resilience. The engagement with and understanding of number, place value and operations, provides a strong foundation to support their ongoing maths progress when they return to mainstream.

Students leave Lansdown Park Academy better prepared to access maths in their next settings, and with a stronger maths foundation to support ongoing success with further study and future employment.
