Careers Curriculum

Intent

At Lansdown Park Academy we believe that good career guidance is essential for social mobility, supporting positive destinations and improving life chances. Every young person needs high-quality career guidance to make educated, informed decisions about their future choices.

We support pupils and enable them to make informed choices about their future education, employment and training. This is achieved by:

  • Termly sessions with a qualified careers advisor.
  • Weekly careers education sessions.
  • A curriculum linked to the 8 Skills Builder skills – listening, speaking, problem solving, creativity, adapting, planning, leadership and teamwork.
  • Empowering pupils to begin to plan, make decisions and manage their own futures.
  • Encounters with employers on, or off site.
  • Opportunities for work experience on the school site or off site where appropriate.
  • Encounters with providers of post-16 education, including apprenticeships. As most of our students are on short-term placements, this may involve looking at the local offer during careers sessions. For students attending the school for the full year, we aim to give them at least one in-person encounter.
  • Students in pathway 2 may complete an extended project on an area of interest where appropriate.

The careers curriculum is linked to the Equalex framework and covers the following topics.

Using Career Pilot to find out which jobs may suit their interests Researching careers in different sectors Understanding the essential workplace skills. Job studies based on the Skills Builder framework
Understanding different routes into employment and where to look for post-16 options. Understanding different sectors and labour market information Completing CVs and application forms Interview skills and references
Green jobs and the changing world of work Understanding different types of workplace Understanding different roles within a workplace Challenging stereotypes about the workplace.

Impact

By the end of their placement; students will have an increased awareness of the range of career opportunities available to them, be more aware of their passions, skills and work preferences and be motivated by careers opportunities which they may not have otherwise considered. We measure the impact of the careers and employability entitlement through the Gatsby Benchmarks. The students’ view of the effectiveness of their careers guidance is measured through the Compass+ Future Skills Questionnaire and the reports from their bespoke careers guidance sessions, which are shared with their destination schools.

Provider Access Policy Statement 2024-2025

Academies are required to ensure that there is an opportunity for a range of education and training providers to access students in years 7 to 9 for the purposes of informing them about approved education, qualifications or apprenticeships. Academies must also have a policy statement that outlines the circumstances in which education and training providers will be given access to these students. This is outlined in section 42B of the Education Act 1997. This policy shows how our Academy complies with these requirements.

A provider wishing to request access should contact:
